FEBRUARY 8th 19.30 – ADMISSION £5.00 THE WHISTLERS (REFRESHMENTS AVAILABLE)
Political satire meets pulp fiction in this playful, watchable thriller that works both as a critique of state bureaucracy, and as brisk film noir. Cristi is a weatherworn cop who’s become part of the Bucharest crime syndicate he’s meant to be investigating. This takes him to the island of La Gomera in the Canaries, where he is schooled in the art of ‘silbo’ whistling – a secret language used by shepherds that sounds like birdsong and hence is perfect for keeping secrets from his eavesdropping colleagues. The result is a slick and engaging mystery, steeped in the classic hardboiled mythology of Hammett and Chandler.
Starring: Vlad Ivanov, Catrinel Marlon, Rodica Lazar

JANUARY 14th – 7.30pm – Admission £5.00 WILD ROSE
A brilliant performance by Jessie Buckley supported by Julie Walters. Refreshingly free from the usual clichés of this genre, WILD ROSE tells the story of a young woman from Glasgow who lives for country music and the future she is sure she could have in Nashville. But she has two children and her mother is determined she should face up to her responsibilities. The critics loved this British film – and rightly so – it turns disappointment into something beautiful.
FEBRUARY 11th 7.30pm – Admission £5.00 – THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM
If ever there was a film to be revelled in by a community like ours which is centred on farming, the changing seasons and the land, this is it. THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM is a documentary made over ten years, following John and Molly Chester who gave up the rat race to buy 200 acres of derelict, dusty Californian farmland to try to convert it to a biodynamic farm with hundreds of crops and no pesticides. In ten years, nature doesn’t pull its punches with snail infestations of biblical proportions, coyote incursions and lambing disasters. But this is also the most joyous film which will resonate with anyone who lives on a farm, lives near a farm or knows a farmer, (and that’s all of us around here). As Time Out magazine said; “it’s all here in a film that feels simultaneously cosmic, elemental and personal. Best of all, it’ll leave you feeling oddly hopeful for the planet”. Come, even if you’ve not been to Flicks before, bring your neighbours, bring your friends, bring everyone. You won’t regret it.
MARCH 10th 7.30pm Admission £5.00 – THE GOOD LIAR
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen fizz in this mystery thriller – a drama with touches of Patricia Highsmith, Agatha Christie and John Le Carre. A con artist, suave and charming (they always are), befriends Betty McLeish who is absolutely rolling in it and conveniently, recently widowed. But what at first seems like a straightforward con gets more complicated when the devious Roy finds himself getting embroiled in Betty more than he intended.
APRIL 14th 7.30pm Admission £5.00 KNIVES OUT
A whodunit with panache – KNIVES OUT is a murder mystery in which just about everyone could have dunnit. But it’s different in that it was made by a director, Rian Johnson, who obviously revels in the genre and has great fun with it. THE WALL STREET JOURNAL’s critic said it was
“an entertainment as sharp, witty and exhilarating as any movie lover could wish for”.
MAY 12th 7.30pm Admission £5.00 LA BELLE EPOQUE
Written and directed by Nicolas Bedos, La Belle Époque is a dazzling tour de force for everyone who likes magnificent escapism. Victor is in his sixties, trapped in a stale marriage. When his wife takes a lover (well it is a French film) and throws him out of their apartment, he finds a company called Time Travellers who – for a very large sum of money – say they can take you back to the happiest day of your life and of your choosing. So Victor chooses the day he met his future wife in a bar – and, as they say in France “ca deroule”… A lovely, light hearted romantic comedy, done with French style and period attention to detail ends our spring season.
